The Originals...

One Friday evening when I had nothing to do, I recollected some english movies I had watched, and thought I would blog the "Originals" for some Tamil movies...

Anbe Sivam - "Planes, Trains and Automobiles"

Tenali - "What About Bob?"

Magalir Mattum - "9 To 5"

'Mani Chittirathaazh' and 'Chandramukhi' - Inspired from Alfred Hitchcock's "Vertigo"

Avvai Shanmugi - "Mrs. Doubtfire"

Pudiya Paravai - "Chasing Crooked Shadow"

Michael Madana Kamarajan - The hut on the cliff episode has its origin in Charlie
Chaplin's "Gold Rush"

Virumandi - Inspired by the concept in Akira Kurusawa's "Rashômon"

In many cases, it is almost a 97% Dippy, but how on earth are they claimed as an 'Inspiration'?

Isnt it so funny that Indian movies are, or should I say were, exact copies of American storylines. This was a major trend in the 90's and only recently has started to drift away. It is wonderful to see that Hindi moviemakers are now making movies that depict life in India. We just saw Munnabhai part 2. It was refreshing to see that a major icon in our history, Gandhiji played a major role in this film and this idea was definately not copied from an American film. Circuit is definately original baby!!

India is taking more pride in itself, slowly but surely. I have full pride in being Indian and I say this not because Westerners think India is cool. I have cousins in India who are in their early 20's. When I was younger they used to tell me that they want to move to U.S. and that I am so lucky to live here. You know what, I havent heard that for awhile now!

I'm glad you have more time now to blog Priya. Its nice to put down your thoughts and share them with others. I hope to start blogging soon as well.

I can think of few more..

Gajini - Memento

Anniyan - Seven

Anniyan has lot more 'masala' added to the story, probably to suit the taste of south indian mass. But Seven sticks to the plot and thats what makes it an excellent intense (and even disturbing) thriller.

I agree that there were a few xerox copies with some inspirational exceptions. But don't you love when a little bit of masala is added with our own "mann vasanai" and some songs (and dances of course)? I do.

I cannot sit thru just xerox copies if I had already seen an original. Munnabhai-1 was amazing to me but I couldn't stand Vasool-Raja because each and every scene was ditto.

I've watched Memento more than once and it is one of my all time favorites. Even then...Ghajini was an interesting thriller (not just because of Asin) and a good one.

I think the copies need a few inspirational (or localized) twists to make the "original-seen" audience sit thru the complete movie.
